can someone help my how to get into universities like stanford, harvard,uc berkely with scholar ship i am an indian btech student
Hello Aakash,
You could go through the websites of the institutes you’re aiming to go to. They usually list all attributes they’d want to see in prospective students. Also, drop a mail to the Admissions team, their email ID will be listed on the website of respective colleges.
As per what I know, most US universities, particularly the top ones view your profile holistically. No one factor is considered in isolation. It is the combined strength of your profile which decides your final chances of getting in.
For e.g. In case you’ve studied in a mediocre Indian college, you would have to score more on the aptitude tests to prove that you have the intellect to survive in a top american university.
Following are some of the factors that are take into consideration.
-
Undergrad Institute and GPA
US unis refer to a world ranking system which assigns a particular class to prominent international colleges. This is how they ascertain how good or bad your undergrad college is. -
Aptitude Test scores
This is only a qualifying criteria, albeit an important one. Hence, even if you score a 330/340 on the GRE you may still get rejected by the top universities if your profile is not strong enough. -
Statement of Purpose
THE MOST important out of them all. If you manage to write an SOP which is convincing and honest, it drastically improves your chances of acceptance.
Also, research about the university thoroughly before applying. This will help you customize your SOP as per the university. It always helps if you display absolute clarity on WHY do you want to study in that particular uni. -
Essays/Body of work
This is subjective. Some universities ask for additional essays or a portfolio/work samples from your current job. -
English Proficiency Tests
This again is very important. You will have to appear for TOEFL or IELTS. In case you do not manage to get the required score, you will have to take up mandatory English courses. However, scoring on these tests is relatively easy than the aptitude tests. -
Work Experience
If you’ve worked in a relevant field, nothing like it. Applicants with work ex are preferred, as far as i know. -
Letter of Recommendation
Again, very very important. It could be from your employer or from a professor. You will need at least two letters.
I am currently in the process of applying to American unis myself and this what I know from my experience so far.
Hope this helps!
