When seen from one side, the circle of illumination appears to be a semi circle. However should we just consider the one side of earth and ignore the other. That's not possible because Earth is a 3D figure not a 2D one. Hence the circle of illumination is actually a circle keeping in mind the 3D figure of Earth.
