Civil engineering better then mechanical engineering ?
HELLO MOHAMMAD YUSUF
THANKS FOR ASKING
Civil and Mechanical are both great branches of engineering... This question can be answered only on the basis of one’s interest. Both are evergreen fields whose scope cannot and need not be calculated. The only difference one can assess on is how graduates from either of the fields build their base. For Civil Engineering you are more involved in field work at open space unlike Mechanical Engineering whose work involves mostly in a closed environment. By intensity, both are equally cumbersome but Civil gets the extra edge due to the environment. Mechanical Engineers have a better option in diversifying their knowledge apart from Thermal Engines, etc.
Here are some things you should consider before opting:
1 - Physics is the base for both.
Both civil and mechanical equally require through knowledge of applied physics
and material science - solid and fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics, physical
properties of materials etc. If you not are a physics person, you should
seriously reconsider some other branch.
2 - Syllabus.
Even though the base for both the branches is physics, the syllabus differs
immensely. It is suggested that you take a look at the syllabus of both the
branches.
Just by browsing through the syllabus you will get an idea of what you will be
studying for the next 4 years.
I recommend you download the PDF's of the syllabi's of both the courses form
the IIT Bombay's website.
3 - Talk to working engineers.
Talk to working
engineers about the work they do.
I can't stress on
how much important it is. This is the single most important source of accurate
and up to date information about the kind of work you will be doing in the
future.
Talk to your family
members who are currently studying or practicing.
You will find that civil engineering is not just about
'construction'. You don't just build dams, skyscrapers, canals, tunnels etc.
A civil engineer
DESIGNS. They have to analyze whether the structure will stand strong for the
next 75 years.
Jobs:
You cannot go wrong with any branch. Both civil and mechanical engineers have an ever rising demand. If you choose to work hard and cut the bullshit, sky is the limit.
State and the Central Government
recruit engineers from both the branches.
You just have to pass their entrance tests. Depending on your score, you could
land a super class one or a class one post.
You can start your own business too. Civil and mechanical engineering are the type of branches which provide the kind of knowledge that can be immediately applied to create physical objects. Objects that are ready for sale immediately. So you can create a really awesome construction company which exclusively specializes in building 5 star hotels. Or you can create a team which maintains the largest land drill in your country!
Both the branches are unique by themselves. It only depends on your Interest & Passion, and now the choice is yours. Do what u can do better.
HOPE IT HELPS
ALL THE BEST
Civil and mechanical engineers both work within the engineering field and design things that are constructed. Mechanical and Civil Engineering are the two oldest and most applied fields of engineering. Civil Engineering is primarily about construction, design, and maintenance of the civil structures, infrastructures, and buildings. Mechanical engineering, on the other hand, in the simplest words is the engineering stream that deals in the mechanics of automobiles and other machines.
Both these fields of engineering are evergreen and offer great job prospects to the students. These fields are applied in every sphere of life and in all places of the world. The job openings are available in the private as well as the public sector or government organizations.
So, the question is which one is better. Here is a quick look at both the fields to understand them better so that you can make a choice.
Mechanical Engineering and its Scope
There are various types of courses available for this field of engineering. There are basic diploma courses as well as Master’s courses. These courses are provided by several institutes in India, and some of them are very reputed, such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Jobs are available to the students who have completed diploma or B.Tech. However, for better prospects it is best to go for the higher studies. Some of the sub-fields in which you can obtain specialization through higher studies are:
- Tool Engineering
- Machine Design
- Mechanical system dynamics and design
- Engineering design and analysis
To enhance the growth prospect, several students also pursue MBA after obtaining a degree in mechanical engineering. The job opportunities are abundant for the mechanical engineers. Some of the industries that hire these engineers are:
- Oil and Gas
- Automobile
- Aviation
- Piping
- Manufacturing industries
- Marine
- Steel manufacturing
Civil Engineering and Its Scope
Just like mechanical engineering, students can apply for a job after completing a diploma or after obtaining the bachelor’s degree. However, for more lucrative opportunities, it is advisable to opt for higher studies and specialization. Some of the options for higher studies and specialization in civil engineering include:
- Geo Informatics
- Structural engineering
- Offshore structures
- Hydraulics
- Highway technology
Again, just like mechanical engineering, the students can also go for MBA degree after obtaining the specialization in a particular field. This will enable them to be eligible for the managerial position in the organizations.
Civil engineers are hired in the organizations like real estate and construction, oil and gas, development authorities, and more. There are job openings in both government as well as private undertakings.
So, which one is better?
The truth is that it is not possible to tell one better from the other. Both of them have their own merits. They are different lines of engineering that sometimes come in unison. Job opportunities are galore in both the fields.
More often than not, it is the matter of personal preferences. If you get overwhelmed by the structures and construction, civil engineering is the one for you. If you are intrigued by the machine designs, their mechanics and dynamics, go for mechanical engineering.
