The following steps are used to make greater alkynes from lower alkynes:

There are two steps to this reaction:

Step 1: Acetylides are formed when the terminal ethyne reacts with the sodamide.

Step 2: Acetylides combine with a haloalkane (ethylchloride) to form but-1-yne, which is a higher alkyne.

HC≡CHNaNH2HC≡CNaCH3CH2BrHC≡C−CH2CH3.
