Currently, I am studying in mechanical 3rd year and I want to give gate exam for computer science (CS) in 2022. So it's possible to give a paper in a different branch? And as a 3rd-year student can I apply for February 2022 gate exam?

IIT Kharagpur will be conducting the GATE for the year 2022. As per the latest updates Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2022 is scheduled to be on 5, 6, 12 and 13 February 2022.
As per the eligibility criteria of the GATE , candidates in their third year of an undergraduate degree or later can apply for GATE. As you have mentioned that you are currently pursuing your 3rd year in an undergraduate degree program, so yes you are eligible to write GATE 2022.
Answering to your query, a candidate can appear for any paper irrespective of the program he/she is pursuing his/her degree in. So being from Mechanical Engineering branch, you are eligible to write GATE for Computer Science Engineering.
