Define equivalent weight of a base. Calculate the equivalent weight of the following: 1.Ca(OH)2 2.NAOH
Hey!
The equivalent weight of base : is the weight of compound that contains one equivalent of hydroxide ion (OH-) .
Formula for calculating equivalent weight of base = molecular weight / acidity of base
For Ca(OH)2 : acidity is two as it can donate two OH- ions
It's equivalent weight is =
molecular weight /2
= (40+16*2+1*2)/2
=74/2
=37
For NaOH acidity is 1 as it can donate one OH- ion
It's equivalent weight = molecular weight/acidity
= (23+16+1)/1
=40
Hope it helped to clear your delimma
Thank you
