As a special educator you will come in contact with and be responsible for the educational needs of children with a wide range of disabilities. These children will also require a variety of different services, modifications and accommodations in their educational experiences. Knowledge of each type of disability and the specific needs of the children with that disability is very important if you plan to be involved in the field of special education. Categories of disablities include:

  • autism,
  • deaf-blindness
  • emotional disturbance
  • hearing impairment (including deafness)
  • mental retardation
  • multiple disabilities
  • orthopedic impairment
  • other health impairment
  • Specific learning disability
  • speech or language impairment
  • traumatic brain injury or
  • visual impairment (including blindness)

Role of the teacher:

  1. Identification of the children with disabilities in the classroom.
  2. Referring the identified to the experts for further examination and treatment.
  3. Accepting the children with disabilities.
  4. Developing positive attitude between normal and disabled children.
  5. Placing the children in the classroom in proper places so that they feel comfortable and are benefited by the classroom interaction.
  6. Removing architectural barriers wherever possible so that children with disabilities move independently.
  7. Involving the children with disabilities in almost all the activities of the classroom.
  8. Making suitable adaptation in the curriculum transaction so that the children with disabilities learn according to their ability.
  9. Make use of parental guidance and counselling and public awareness program through school activities.
  10. Collaborating with medical and physiological doctors, social works, parents and special teachers to understand better how to deal with differently abled children.
  11. Adaptation in evaluation for children with special needs.
  12. Providing remedial instruction to the children who require it.

Hope it helps you. All the best!

Hi,

Hope you are doing good.

Every teacher plays an important role in every student's life but with the differently-abled students, they need to be more vigilant. A teacher has to arrange a different learning environment for them.

He has to make assessments, activities short and concise so that they will be able to do them more easily. Every student is born with a special talent so the teacher helps them to know their strongest point if they are weak in other sections. That teacher helps in creating a support network to make sure that they are helping one another in getting things done. That is how a teacher should facilitate the learning of differently-abled children.
