The development of the nervous system in humans, or neural development or neurodevelopment involves the studies of embryology, developmental biology, and neuroscience to describe the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which complex nervous systems form, and develop during prenatal development, and continue to develop postnatally.

Neural development is one of the earliest systems to begin and the last to be completed after birth. This development generates the most complex structure within the embryo and the long time period of development means in utero insult during pregnancy may have consequences to development of the nervous system.

Development of Nervous System :

Nervous system and special sense organs and derivatives of the neuroectoderm and develop from three sources

1. Neural Plate : Forms the CNS including preganglionic autonomic ne rves
2. Neural Crest : Appear at the junction of neural plate and peripheral ectoderm , undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition and migrate away just prior to its fusion of neural plate to form neural tube.They form the majority of neurons and glia outside CNS , most of the ganglia. Also fomr neurons in adrenal medulla and chromaffin cells
3. Ectodermal Placodes : Develop from a common panplacodal ectoderm a horseshoe shaped region of ectoderm surrounding the anterior neural plate and neural crest. Cranial sensory ganglia develops from this.
