Approximately 80-90% of first-year students had a laptop. Having a laptop definitely offers advantages.  Computer science, for example, requires the use of a laptop. Professors often take the easy way out and teach their classes primarily using visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations, which they then publish to some type of online platform. Thus, studying with a laptop is more easier because you can just download it from the internet rather than travelling to the local computer store and printing out each and every lecture slide.

Having a laptop in first year, like most things, comes down to how you use it.
