IT means 'information technology' and is a broad term that covers using using computers and software to solve organizational problems.
When we use the term software engineering, we are referring to the specific process of creating software programs; a process that goes from gathering requirements to building the actual software source code.
You can be engaged in IT without doing any software engineering. There are plenty of organizations that have data centers where they purchase and operate other people's software but do build the software themselves.
But it is impossible to be involved in software engineering and not be involved in IT because you develop computer programs today by using computers and software.
You need to decide whether you want to build software, install and operate it, or simply use it.
Dear Aniket,
IT professionals installed computer systems, using software and maintaining networks and databases, while computer scientists deals in mathematics and software design.
Both the branches have good scope in terms of jobs but software engineeres have advantage over IT.
Good Luck!!
