Hello,
In India's subordinate judiciary, there are three types of judges.
Judicial Magistrate/ District Munsif is a civil judge. He works on both civil and criminal cases.
Sub judge/ Sessions Judge is referred to be a Civil Judge (Senior Division). He handles both sorts of cases: appeals from district magistrates and other Special Acts Original Petitions.
District Judge is the highest level in the Subordinate Judicial System. He handles civil and criminal matters, as well as appeals from civil judges (senior division), sessions cases, criminal appeals from JM, and other unique cases under Special Acts. He will be referred to as a District Judge when dealing with civil matters and as a Sessions Judge when dealing with criminal ones.
A Judicial Officer's profession begins as a Judicial Magistrate First Class and as a Civil Judge Junior Division. Civil Judge Senior Division is the next step above. The Officer will be assigned as an Additional Sessions Judge, where the Judge will oversee Criminal Case Trials, either concurrently or after some experience. The District and Sessions Judge will then file an independent charge.High Court Judges are selected at this level.
Hope it helped
