Question : Directions: A farmer is preparing his field. He starts his tractor from the garage and drives 5 km towards the East. From there, he turns right and drives 6 km. Then, he turns right and drives 8 km. Again, he turns right and drives 10 km when his tractor breaks down. What is the shortest distance between his current location and the garage?

Solution : Firstly, we will draw the diagram as per the given instructions –

Now, we have to find the shortest distance between his current location and the garage.


EF = ED – FD (FD = BC)
EF = 10 – 6
EF = 4 km
FA = FB – AB (FB = DC)
FA = 8 – 5
FA = 3 km
By using Pythagoras theorem –
EA 2 = FA 2 + EF 2
EA 2 = 3 2 + 4 2
EA 2 = 9 + 16
EA = 5 km

So, 5 km is the shortest distance between his current location and garage. Hence, the first option is correct.
