Hi Abhilash,

The 73rd Amendment was passed in 1992 by the Narasimha Rao government, that was brought into effect on April 24, 1993. This Amendment fortells the Gram Sabha as the foundation of the Panchayat Raj System to perform functions and powers provided to it by the State Legislatures.

Hi

Significance of 73rd constitutional amendment in Indian democracy

The provisions of 73rd Amendment Act made it mandatory the elections to Panchayats in due time on regular basis. It makes provisions for the reservation of seats at all the three levels in favour of women, the scheduled castes, the scheduled tribes and the other backward classes. The  73rd  amendmentbrought in 800,000 women into the political processes in asingle election. That was a big step indeed in enfranchisingwomen.
