Dear aspirant,
The answer to your question depends on which course you are looking for and which colleges you are trying to get admission into.
Usually, colleges like national institutes NIT, IIT, IISER, IISc have a minimum qualifying boards marks and then they'll give admission based on the rank of entrance examinations.
For engineering, there are colleges that conduct private entrance examinations like VITEEE, AEEE, BITSAT etc.
Some colleges use JEE and board marks to create a merit list and then give admission based on that
Mostly, top engineering colleges give admissions based on entrance tests like JEE or state entrance examinations only.
For medical and nursing you'll have to get a good rank in NEET or other nursing examinations to get admissions. There is a qualifying percentage that you'll have to get in class 12 for being eligible .
There are different entrance exams for other courses as well.
For science (BSc/ BS-MS) - IISER, IISc, NISERs - have entrance examinations like JEE Mains/ JEE Advanced, IISER-IAT/JEE Advanced, NEST respectively . Most universities also have entrance exam but they also consider your class 12 percentage.
The class 12 eligibility criteria has been scarped off for most college admissions this year due to the COVID-19 situation.
Feel free to ask a question based on a specific course and college of your interest to get more specific answers.
Hope this helps.
