Riviera, which is the annual international sports and cultural fest of VIT University was successfully inaugurated on Thursday. The four day vibrant festival was inaugurated by popular Indian cricketer Suresh Raina. The campus of VIT University was filled with both participants and spectators for the first day of the festival. Riviera will be a four day fest filled with cultural as well as sports entertainment.
The first day of the fest started off on a good note with a marathon, a run for Digital India. The marathon saw a huge turnout of as many as 5800 students participating along with the participants from Kenya and Ethiopia. The marathon was 9.9 km long and the students enthusiastically participated in the starting event of the University fest.
Mr. Suresh Raina, who inaugurated the festival, also presented the cash prizes to the winners of the marathon. From the boys category, the first prize of Rs. 20,000 was bagged by Mikiyas Yemata from Ethiopia, the second prize of Rs.10,000 by Misganaw from Ethiopia and the third prize of Rs. 5000 by Peter Mwangi from Kenya. Among the girls, R. Gomathi from C. Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering took home the first prize, the second prize went to Merina Mathew from TCS, Cochin and the third prize was secured by S. Revathi from University College of Engineering, Kancheepuram.
VIT University Chancellor G. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor Anand A. Samuel and Vice President G.V. Selvam were present.
To mark the inauguration, colourful balloons were released and a few questions were answered by Mr. Raina.
VIT’s ‘Got Talent’ was hosted along with a number of Telugu events during the day. A session on car racing was organised by the Society for Automotive Engineers and they showcased their racing skills too. Singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan and the cast of Tamil movie Kootathil Oruvan were featured in the pro-show. According to Arbaaz Akbar, Sports Committee said that 30 teams took part in cricket and 25 teams took part in handball events.
