No..not at all.its the job of chemist.i completed my b.tech in chemical engineering and we people deal with maths like energy and mass balance.chem engineers deal with the process and not chemical reactions. Even if there is a reaction u just need to know only the overall outlook of it and u need not know it in depth

Yes, you are required to memorize those large reactions and compound names because this is as the name describes in CHEMICAL ENGINEERING you are going to study about formation and use of different chemicals in the real scenario.
