Yes. It Depends on rank, nationality and company.
In general, higher the rank, lower the contract period.
Crew may have a contract duration of 7 to 9 months. Junior officer's, 6 to 8 months. Senior officer's 4 to 6 months.
So you can visit your family and head for vacation at the end of your contract tenure.
Apart from this, some companies allow some officer's to have their spouse and children onboard
