Hi Amulya,

Aerospace engineering is broadly divided into two types of engineering- aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering.

An Aeronautical Engineer is crucial in the research, design, development and performance testing of commercial and military airplanes, weapon systems.

Aeronautical engineers improve flight safety & fuel efficiency, develop control systems, analyze new materials and use advanced technologies to meet customer needs and reduce the environmental impact of air commute.

Coming to your question, the scope of aeronautical engineering in India. This is a difficult question to answer in every aspect, of course, you get a lot of opportunities in the government sector but it isn’t easy. I guess nothing is easy and enough but that shouldn’t stop you from taking up this course or profession if you are passionate enough about it and things involved interests you.

OPPORTUNITIES YOU'LL GET AFTER AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING

Maintenance of Aircraft - Engineers test new aerodynamic and aviation systems, and maintain them.

Aircraft Designer - Engineers specializing in this field deal with designing, constructing, and testing aircraft, missiles, and spacecrafts. They may conduct basic and applied research to evaluate adaptability of materials and equipment to aircraft design and manufacture.

Aviation Engineer- Engineers in this field deal with the airport design, aircraft navigation technologies, and aerodrome planning.

Defence - Aeronautical Engineers in this field deal with creation, maintenance and deployment of defence aircrafts such as fighter jets, choppers, bombers, etc. Also the job requires to be able to handle such aircraft at necessary times.

And if you have a real passion for the field, you can work in the government sector with ISRO, DRDO, HAL, etc. And then we can look at private companies such as L & T, Godrej & Boyce aerospace, Boeing, Airbus, Mahindra, etc. You can also go for the INDIAN NAVY and INDIAN AIRFORCE.

Now, if I talk about the best Indian Institutions to study aeronautical engineering. Some of them are mentioned below:

1)Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram

2)Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

3)Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

4)Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Dehradun

5)Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai

6)Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

7)Lovely professional university, Punjab

8)Park College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore

9)School of Aviation Science and Technology, Delhi

10) MIT Manipal University, Manipal

In case you tend to lose interest from the aeronautical branch then you must have some backup right. So I'll help you out in that by introducing to more options you can go for.

If your preference is based on highest paying sectors, you can opt for

a) Petroleum Engineering

b)Nuclear Engineering

c) Chemical Engineering

d) Material Engineering and there are many more.

If you want to choose from core branches, you can go for

a) Electrical Engineering

b)Electronics and Communication Engineering

c) Mechanical Engineering

d) Civil Engineering.

Feel free to ask any query or doubt regarding the above shared information in the comment section below.

Thank You.

Goodluck.

You answered it well
But my key question still remains the same?
Because its also about if i think of negative then if things dont go my way in future then what will happen to me and my career ??
This is what my concern is?
Because my family always suggest me to go for computer science engineering after my 12th exams! What they believe is that yes its a cattle like career but the point is getting job is sure in it! If we do spend on the Engineering fees so that will be valuable as i will get the job anyhow?!?!

Hey Amulya!!!I completely do understand your and your family's concern regarding you having a secured future. I do agree that today Computer Science has a lot of scope but nearly all subfields of engineering are expected to experience growth over the upcoming years. We are moving towards AUTOMATION right, so even electrical engineers and electronic engineers are equally important and needed in the future. I would really suggest you to choose a field of your interest because if you'll excel in that then trust me no company could say NO to you as the company would want their employees to have a hold on to what they have studied. Suppose you have zero interest in computer science and then too you choose to study, it might be possible that you'll end up ruining your degree with lower grades since you couldn't be able to develop your interest in programming in the entire course span (This is just an assumption from my perspective).Well, in that case you'll feel even worse and there would be no assurance of a secured job too. I'll sum up by saying that if you feel even a little bit of inclination towards computer science then go for it otherwise do find out your interest first and choose wisely. Make sure you do good in whichever field you go. Goodluck.

Hello aspirant

As per your question,Aerospace engineering is a combination of two intertwined sciences: Astronautical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering

Astronautical Engineering refers to the science of flying specifically in the outer space. Therefore, space science is very closely related to astronautical engineering.

Aeronautical Engineering is the subject dealing with aerial machines and their complete functioning in various domains such as structures, aerodynamics, propulsion, and avionics.

In India, you have institutes mostly offering Aeronautical Engineering.

Now coming to the scope for aeronautical engineering in the country, I won't bluff but it's pretty meagre. It's tough to secure a job post your bachelor's. Of course, there are a few government companies such as DRDO, HAL, and NAL; but most of them require recommendations to get in or may have their own entrance exams especially in the case of IIST to later on join ISRO.

Hope this information is relevant to your question.

If you have any enquiries please feel free to ask.

Thank you:)

Hello Amulya,

Aeronautical engineering is a field which is upcoming and will take a few years to establish it's niche in India . Apart from that, many students take up the course as the sector provides a lot of new and exciting opportunities to the student and is a fresh shift from the same old IT and CS branches. Students after their graduation can apply in sectors like Airlines, Air Force, Corporate Research Companies, Defence Ministry, Helicopter Companies, Aviation Companies, NASA etc.

The reason behind the popularity of the course can be given to the increasing popularity of air travel and space exploration which would require experts to design and maintain improvements. Looking at heightening growth rate, the demand for smart and create Aerospace Engineers is only going to increase in the future.

Many distinguished organisations like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Defense Research and Development Laboratories (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Civil Aviation Department, Air India, India Space Research Organization (ISRO) are the top recruiters for aeronautical engineers.

The salary package after the recruitment is somewhere around INR 35, 000 to INR 40,000 per month. The maximum salary offered to an Aerospace Engineer graduated from IITs is INR 15 lakhs per annum.

Some of the best colleges in the country for Aeronautical engineering are-

1.Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University, Chennai.

2.Punjab Engineering College-PEC, Chandigarh.

3.Defence Institute of Advanced Technology(DIAT/IAT), Pune.

4.Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

5.SASTRA University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

You can apply to the college of your choice and make your dreams come true. Good Luck!
