Does an MBA student need to learn Excel VBA? Is VBA used widely?

It can be, depending on your situation. If you want a job which requires building complex Excel workbooks then of course, you will need to learn that. If you are asking because you want to learn some new computer language just in case it’s useful, or because you think it might look good on your resume, I’ll caution you that VB is not a simple language to learn and it is easy to have the details slip away from you if you are not using it fairly frequently. That problem is shared by many computer languages, of course, and Excel does include some tools to help remind you of what to do next if you don’t remember something immediately.

However, if you have a specific problem and you are evaluating the options available to you for solving that one problem, be aware that learning VB for Excel requires a significant learning curve, and if you won’t be regularly using it after spending that effort to learn it, the utility of knowing VB degrades fairly quickly.

There is one other factor — the difference between using VB on a Mac, vs using VB on a Windows PC. If you will be using VB on a PC then great — you can ignore the rest of this message. But if you are using a Mac as your primary computer, you need to know something specific before deciding to dedicate your time to make the effort of learning VB for Excel.

Microsoft has never supported Macs for Office (specifically Excel) at any level similar to PCs. The version of Excel for Macs tends to lag by a year the version released to PCs, and even then it isn’t feature-for-feature the same. There are features left out of the Mac product that PCs get to use. Further, the Mac product is not as reliable as the PC product — it will have more bugs, and they will be fixed slower or not at all compared to the PC product.
