gate stands for graduate aptitude test in engineering. based on gate scores admission to m.tech and phd courses is offered by iits, nits and tier 1 institute in India. however the eligibility criteria for appearing in gate exam is candidates must have completed b.tech course of 4 years or diploma + btech course of 6 years or  master degree  course of 2 years in relevant discipline. how see final years candidates or candidates who are in third year of engineering course are eligible to apply. students from engineering background may choose any of the stream to appear in gate exam. so even if your stream is medical electronics you can choose gate paper of bio medical engineering.

Tech): If you want to take admission in the undergraduate program, you must complete your 12th in Science stream with a minimum of 50% from a recognized board. You must also clear the necessary engineering entrance exams, like JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
