There are certain areas where your 12th scores are useful and certain areas or fields where they are not so much. Let me give you a few examples:

- If you wish to go for DU admissions then yes, 12th marks are absolutely important.

- If you wish to go for national level under graduate exams - JEE, NEET, CLAT, etc. then a minimum of 50 or 60% (based on exam) is enough to get you the eligibility to appear in those exams.

What happens afterwards?

Again, it depends:

- If you finish you under graduation and aim for higher studies CAT, GRE, etc. then you need to keep in mind that the best business schools pay attention to your overall academic performance and so does the good universities abroad. Even if you score extraordinary marks in their entrance exams and get to the interview stage, chances are you may have to do some explaining if your scores are poor.

- If you go for other professional fields like government jobs (UPSC, etc.) then they do not care much about your past scores.

In short, your 12th scores will matter (with decreasing importance) at least till you do our masters or go for private sector jobs (not always though) you get plenty of chances to redeem yourself through your under graduate performances, entrance exam scores, other versatile talents, etc.

If you go for government sector jobs then no, they don't need to see your 12th scores and judge you for that.

Importance of class 12 board result depends on your career or profession. But, a student with good academic records has a much more options as compared to person with low mark; since the student will be able to satisfy the eligibility criteria of different jobs including MNCs. Your, not only 12th grades but also 10th grades, are asked while admission in colleges for UG, PG or any other course. Also, they are considered during your placement drives or internship offers.

So, the bottom line is yes they matter therefore it's better to have an upper edge in this field.
