Dear Student,

The most important prerequisite is that you enjoy biochemistry! This isn't my scientific response, but it's important to note that you shouldn't feel pressured to become a biochemist.

Anyway, starting with your undergraduate studies, it is advised that you pursue a B.S. rather than a B.A. in a science subject. This is mostly because of the increased exposure to research you will have during your schooling. However, it's completely acceptable if you aren't a BS. I have several pals who earned their B.A.s in biochemistry. Additionally, the path to becoming a biochemist is comparable to other jobs in the sciences in that you essentially require graduate-level coursework, whether it be a msc or Ph.D.
