Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon which is emitted by the fossils or rocks. The older the sample the less carbon-14 it would emit. When an animal dies it stops absorbing carbon and begins to disintegrate, so the age is calculated with the help of carbon-14 left in it.
