For direct second year students for engineering admission cota decrease or not?
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has brought down the intake of direct admission to second-year engineering courses for diploma holders from 20 TO 10%
of the approved seats from the upcoming academic year (2019-20).
The decision applicable for engineering and technology, pharmacy and MCA courses has sparked angry reactions from a large section of students and their parents over its ill-conceived timing.
Students who had secured admissions in polytechnic colleges with a hope of getting direct admission in second year engineering, commonly called as the lateral entry, have sought implementation of the decision in question from the academic year 2022-23 considering the interests of already enrolled students.
The AICTE, however, has defended its stance stating that the decision to lower the intake for next academic year was a well-thought decision.
As per guidelines issued by the AICTE in its approved handbook for the year 2019-20, lateral entry to second year of aforesaid degree courses shall be permissible up to a maximum of 10% of the approved intake that shall be over and above, supernumerary to the approved intake, plus the unfulfilled vacancies of the first-year as specified.
One of the affected students pursuing diploma studies said, I had consciously taken a decision to join three-year diploma after my Class 10 as I was clear in my goal of becoming an engineer at the age of 16 and thereafter I can opt for degree course through 20% quota. Now, with the desired quota getting slashed, I doubt whether I will get admission for degree course in a reputed college.
Educational counsellor Vivek Velankar said the AICTE was completely wrong in choosing the timing of the decision concerned. The AICTE should have conveyed the decision to slash the intake of lateral entry well in advance. Ideally, it should announce the decision now and implement it from the academic year 2022-23 so that not a single student is affected, he said.
