Girish Karnad was born on 19th May,1938. He is one artist who serves to be the pride of India as he had emerged to become one of India's brightest shining stars who earned an international praise as a playwright, poet, actor,director, critic, translator who was a contemporary playwright and actor of the Kannada language. His initial schooling was however in Marathi. In 1958, as a young man who studied at Dharwar (Karnatka-Maharashtra border), he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Statistics. He further went to study at Oxford University where he earned the prestigious Rhodes scholarship and went on to receive a Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
He directed for the first time in the movie Vamsha Vruksha which was based on the Kannada novel by S.L Bhairappa. This movie won several national and international awards. He also has acted in a movie called Samskara which was based on a novel by U.R Anantha murthy and was directed by Pattabhirama Reddy.
Hindi movies directed by him are: Utsav and Godhuli. He was also seen in Subhash Ghai's Meri Jung. He continued playing character roles in Sapnay, China Gate, Pukar and Hey Ram. He played the cricket coach to Shreyas Talpade in the famous movie Iqbal.
His plays are also very reputed. They were written in Kannada but have been translated into English and many other languages. He has been popularized for Tughlaq , Yayati and Bikhre Bimb. He also had the opportunity of being the voice of Abdul Kalam in his autobiography "Wings of Fire".
