Lottery is told in the first person from the perspective of school teacher,his friend Vikram and vikram's family. The teacher and Vikram discuss the lottery and speculate over their actions if either were to win a prize ten lakhs of Indian rupees. Vikram states that if he were to win the lottery, he would take a trip around the world in order to study the traditions and religions of different countries and establish public libraries offering world finest book. The teaches states that he would save money in return for the interest . As the study unfolds Vikram realizes that he lacks the funds to purchase a ticket, and approches the teaches with suggestions that they pool the funds and buy ticket together. Vikram purches the ticket by his name.vikram acknowledge that he had gone into a partnership to purchase a ticket with intention of sharing any money won, and relies on vikram's honesty.
When the winner of the lottery announced it is a man of America who is found to have bought the winning ticket .
