Hailstorms are caused by updrafts in thunderstorms that carry raindrops into extremely cold cloud areas where they come into touch with supercooled water droplets (liquid water below the freezing point). When the supercooled water droplets come into touch with the bigger raindrops, a phenomenon known as nucleation may occur. Tiny ice pellets are formed during this freezing process. The hailstones eventually hit the earth when they are too heavy for the updrafts to support.
