Actually gate syllabus for electronic and telecommunications engineering is mostly covered in 2nd and 3rd year so start preparation for the gate .it will help you in the final year project and for placement also so get start topic by topic

Since currently you are in the Second year of your respective University then inorder to start the preparation of GATE first you need to go through with all your core subjects which currently you are studying in the semester such that parallely you can manage both the domain as well you can also refer the link which is given below for understanding more about the stratgize way for the preparation of GATE entrance exam in your respective domain.
