Many students after Engineering prefer to do MBA. But the important shift is mainly from technical to management.
Also if you have aim to get admission in top IIM's or say IIM's then the following things are considered.
Apart from CAT score there is GD/PI/Extempore in the selection process and the criteria differs in all IIMs. To get into top IIM's you need above 99.5 percentage and even top institutes like FMS (DU) almost the same percentile.
There are new IIM's which you get into if you achieve 95 percentile and above.
To apply for CAT you need minimum 50% in your graduation though you can still apply if you are in your final year.

Once you understand the syllabus and exam pattern then you start with giving previous year tests. You will get to know your strong and weak areas and accordingly you can plan to work upon the weak areas.
Follow a symstematic routine and be sincere with it.
Read the newspaper editorial daily. Read the subject you are not really comfortable with.You can refer Hindu editorial for refernce.
You will be required to give online-offline mocks for performance and revision analysis and later you can track your improvement.
It is important to analyse your mock before moving ahead.

If you go for MBA then it will helpful to develop with the different skills such as Personality development, business skill, interview skill, soft skill. It will also help you in terms of communication skill, leadership skill and listening skills. So, if you are interested you can go for it. There is good scope in the future.

Get your basics strong
Once you know your syllabus, and have your study plan ready, you get acquainted with the basics in each section of the test. Having the fundamental concepts clarified is the biggest asset any CAT aspirant can have. If you have conceptual clarity, you can solve any tough problem.
Section-wise preparation
QA: Use the reverse strategy for it, take mock paper, try to solve it with timer, and later analyse it from the solutions available.
DI& LR: Focus on being familiar with versatile forms of data representation like pie chart, bar chart, line graph, piled bar chart, spider chart and complex combinations of these. Later, analyse your preparation via mock tests
VARC: Focus only on those question types where comprehending the content is a core requirement like Para-jumbles, RCs, etc.

Some of the top books for CAT preparation include ‘How to prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for the CAT’ by Arun Sharma, ‘The Pearson Guide to Quantitative Aptitude for the CAT’ by Nishit Sinha, ‘Quantitative Aptitude Quantum CAT’ by Sarvesh Verma to name a few. Other than that, read newspapers and magazines daily to get a grip over your language and comprehension skills along with brushing up General Knowledge.
Mock test or sample papers
Mock tests are most helpful during preparations. It gives an idea of the exam pattern and the kind of questions one can expect in actual CAT. Most importantly, mock test helps to manage time.
