Sachin, CAT is the entrance examination for admission to all the 20 IIMs and more than 1000 participating Institutions. IIMs shortlist candidates for the interview stage based on their own criteria, which may be independent of each other. The process may include Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interviews. Performance in the CAT examination is an important component in the admission process. IIMs may additionally use other factors such as the previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience, gender and academic diversity and other similar inputs in shortlisting and ranking of candidates at various stages of the admission process. The processes, academic cut-offs and the weights allocated to the evaluation parameters may vary across IIMs. Few IIMs like IIM-A,B,C conduct their own admission process and few IIMs go with a joint admission process. Now when you fill in the application form, it is primarily for the IIMs alone. But for other participating B-Schools, you have to fill their application form which means a different application fees. But the CAT exam fees is for all the participating Institutions. You needn't pay another fees for other B schools. In short you pay single exam fees when appearing for CAT. But for every Institution or B-School you want to apply for, you have to pay additional application fees. But that comes after CAT results have been announced.
