There is no special need to prepare for GATE from the very first year. You must enjoy the first year and participate in extra-curricular activities of your college or University. You can start from 3rd year end if you are worried about the preparation.
I will suggest you to take your time and explore what is it you want out of engineering.
Get good in your topics and subjects and good preparation in it shall help you with the GATE entrance as well.
Clear all your doubts during your preparation in your college from first year itself.
Go through news papers, daily updates, general awarness, English vocab and gate previous year papers as of now to start.
Most importantly work on your profile making and get to learn in your first 3 years atleast.
