The best way to start preparation is by knowing the exam pattern .SSC CHSL Tier 1 consists of objective questions from English language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and  General Awareness.There will be a total of 100 questions.

You can start preparing by solving the commonly asked questions in the exam.Read newspapers daily to improve your knowledge in current affairs.Attempt mock tests and work out previous question papers. You can prepare for quantitative aptitude section by giving more focus on the problems from time,work and wages, profit, loss,discounts.

The first thing is be acquainted with the syllabus, that will provide you an idea about what to skip and what to read.

Get your concepts clear,always keep resources minimal, solve mock papers that are available on lot of websites to evaluate your progress.

Make a schedule and accordingly devote time to subjects.

Quantitude  Aptitude; Quicker Maths by M Tyra, Quantitative Aptitude by RS Agarwal/ Fast Track Arithmetic by Arihant Publications
English; General English by SP Bakshi/Plinth to Paramount, the best grammar book is Wren and Martin,you can also go for Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis.
Reasoning; RS Agarwal's Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning/ Analytical Reasoning by MK Pandey.
General Awareness; For static portion,Lucent's GK is best, for dynamic portion the best thing is to read newspaper on a daily basis,you can go for The Hindu or The Indian Express,there are many websites which provide monthly compilations.
