As you are studying second year now. There are mainly 11 subjects that you should study for GATE(Gratitude Aptitude Test in Engineering).
1.Maths(15 to 20 marks)*
2.Theory of computation(5 to 9 marks)*
3.Digital logic(3 to 6 marks)*
4.COA(6 to 9 marks)*
5.Programming and DS(7 to 12 marks)*
6.Algorithms(6 to 7 marks)*
7.Compiler design(3 to 4 marks)*
8.OS(8 to 12 marks)*
9.Data bases(6 to 11 marks)*
10.Computer network(6 to 9 marks)*
11.Software engineering and web technology(2 to 8 marks)*
the above mentioned weightages are the lowest to highest mark of the appropriate question in a particular subject asked from 2011 to 2016.
these contribute 85 marks and the remaining 15 marks is on aptitude for now you should concentrate on your semester and try to give your 100% in your semester exams and in third year you can join for GATE coaching.
Or if you wanted to prepare for it on your own then go through the following instructions and tips for your preparation:
Analyze Syllabus: Analyse the GATE syllabus and refer the previous GATE question papers follow the method of divide and conquer method and prioritize important topics and prepare according to it.
Start the preparation from today don't delay your preparation stay committed about the preparation it would be better to start with some easy and scoring subjects like DBMS, OS, Computer networks.. according to your choice.
Time table: Make a schedule of what to study and when to study depending on the importance of subjects and the topics and follow it at any cost don't postpone the schedule.
Running notes: Take running notes while the lectures and add it some more information while you are studying as it will be very helpful for your revision and it also makes you remember better.
Revise and practice: After completing each chapter revise it and practice questions on that particular topic and make sure that you are thorough with that topic so that you can develop confidence that you will be able to answer any question from that topic and so as the subject.
Mock test: At the final stage of preparation take mock test before attempting the actual GATE this helps you to practice and gain knowledge on various questions and models and the questions in the mock test resembles with the gate actual questions.
Don't stress out: The final days lead you to fear and stress of exam so stay calm and believe in yourself develop self confidence while you are preparing take consecutive breaks which will be helpful and don't remain on a single subject change the subjects time to time so that you don't get bored.

You have ample of time to prepare perfectly for gate. Just plan accordingly and adjust time accordingly. You can prefer coaching or else yo can prepare through online coaching.
- Beginning: Gate is tremendous. Instructing normally encourages you channel what is pertinent and what is not.Start with simple subjects. In spite of the fact that the inquiries are generally redundant, yet recalling more than 2000 equations (Yes truth is stranger than fiction!) expects you to have solid essentials.
- Study Material: Purchase proper books and study materials and have a handbook for sure.
- Short Notes: Go through the syllabus and prepare according to proper plan and make a short notes which is understandable by you.
- Revision: Spend time for revision which is very important revise everything you studied.
- Previous Year Papers: Go through the previous and solve number of papers. Solving them makes you practice for solving by managing time.
If you go through these and plan properly you can easily crack gate.
