Hello aspirant,
NITs are the topmost government technical institutes after IITs in India. Every engineering student dreams to get graduate from their but it is not easy to get into this institution. One needs to have a very good rank. The admission to this institute's depends on various factors such as category, home state, toughness level of examination, number of students applied, etc
With the rank of 2981 in St category you can get admission in some lower NITs but there also you have to compromise with the branch like you will not going to get any good branches. You can get civil, chemical, petroleum engineering, and some other lower branch.
You can go through last year cutoff of different NITs for different branches to have a clear insight

Hello Rihdila,
Based on your rank, you can expect a good number of NITs.
If you belong to the same state as any of the below NITs, then you can expect to get that NIT in Home state quota.
- NIT Trichy, Jalandhar, Silchar, Agartala, Patna, Calicut, Meghalaya, Hamirpur, Uttarakhand, Rourkela, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Kurukshetra, Nagpur, Bhopal, Surat, Jamshedpur, Durgapur, Srinagar, Puducherry, Raipur, Delhi, Goa.
You can get some specific courses in each of these NITs which may not be common to all NITs.
And also you can visit the link to know the chances of getting NITs based on your rank category wise.
