In order to apply for a Masters program in the US, there are 2 exams that you will be required to give for any college.
1. GRE General Test
The marks for the GRE General Test are scored on a scale from 260-340 marks.
This is divided into two categories:
Verbal (120-170)
Quantitative (120-170)
There is also an additional section for Analytical Writing which is scored on a scale of 0-6.
Generally for a an MS in a good college, you will need a Quantitative score of 160 or greater.
The verbal score is less important as long as your overall score is above 310.
For the best colleges, a total score above 320 is preferred with a Quantitative score above 165.
A score of at least 3 is preferred on the Analytical Writing section.
2. English Proficiency Test
A candidate may take either the TOEFL or IELTS exam for English Proficiency (It has been rumored that the IELTS exam is slightly easier to score better on as compared to TOEFL due to is 9 point scale of marking).
TOEFL : For TOEFL, a score of 100 or above out of 120 is sufficient for any course in a good college. Depending on the college, they may even accept 90+ or 80+ scores.
IELTS: On a scale of 1 to 9, a score of 7 or above is preferred by most colleges.
Apart from the tests, an SOP is of crucial importance, as well as 2-3 letters of recommendation.
