1. First of all, a beginner must understand TCP/IP basics, but to rise to the intermediate level, you must understand in intimate details the TCP/IP protocol stack and fields.

2. You must have the knowledge of programming softwares such as DHCP, NAT, IPv6, Subnetting, IPv4, DNS, Routers and Switches, Public and Private IP Address and Numbers, OSI Model, Mac Addressing, ARP, VLANs, and others.

3. You must be familiar with things as PKI (public key infrastructure), SSL (secure sockets layer), IDS (intrusion detection system), firewalls, etc.

4. You must have the knowledge of data bases and should know atleast a specific database such as DBMS's such SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL.
