How can I get placed in top software companies by doing btech in lower branches like Metallurgy, civil, etc in NIT Trichy ?
Greetings Nagamani!
Hope you're doing great.
First for all. congratulations you're studying in NIT Trichy! Not many students get the chance to study here.
Now, coming back to your question, if you want to get placed in a software company then you should get used to in the habit of learning coding languages. There is an ample number of language that are available in the market and which is in high demand as well. For example; JAVA, HTML, C++, PYTHON, RUBY etc. One should have good command in one of two languages and should have a basic understanding of all others as well. There are also other add on application such as CSS, Angular, Nodejs which are useful if you want to be in Full stack developer profile.
Most of the languages can be learned online. There are several online portals where you can solve coding based questions and at the same time can see your overall rank worldwide. Such a website is useful for practice as well if you can get high rank by solving complex problems you might get into the eyes of the recruiters. HackeRank, Codechef, Programmer are just a few examples of coding labs where you can brush up your skills by competing with the brightest minds in the world. Most of the top product based IT companies shortlist students from these coding lab directly.
You should also take a computer architect and other computer science based subjects as an elective subject during your semester course. This will add weightage to your resume. You can get online certification courses as well, however, they are not of much use in the real world unless you know actual coding.
These are just preliminary requirements, you might have to put extra efforts during the placement period to get shortlisted. And if you do, make the best use of that time. Consult your professors or seniors of the same. I'm sure they will guide you through the process. The best part is that anybody from any branch can get into the software department if you've relevant skillsets.
Hope this will help. Do reach out in the comment section below if you need any help.
All the best!
