How can I prepare for CAT exam 2020 with my B.Tech graduation? Can I prepare on my own or I need coaching for the same?

CAT preparation without coaching is a good idea for those who:
  • have already prepared for CAT once by taking full-time classroom assistance
  • are familiar with the complexity of the exam, and know what to do and what not to
  • are familiar with the basic concepts
  • don’t think they would need some personalised doubt solving every now and then
  • are capable of using free online resources wisely
How to prepare for CAT without coaching?
  1. You should buy the right books , or you can opt for some good online course. These will help you to get everything in one place. The books and the course should be such that they cover all the topics in depth and detail. The video form of learning is better because it has greater impact and is thus far more effective
  2. You should access the right free resources . You can read this article on free cat study material (we will have an article on free cat study material). Most of the resources available here are relevant to CAT. You should know how to use these free resources. The drawback with free resources is that you have to depend on your own judgement about whether it is good or bad, required or not required. Sometimes, you may unnecessarily focus on the areas that are less important, or sometimes you may ignore those that are more relevant.
  3. You should join a few WhatsApp groups and Facebook groups . It is good to study in groups, but joining too many of the same type of groups may distract you from your goal. The idea is to keep yourself updated about prep and to be in touch with those who are preparing for the same exam. Being on too many groups at the same does more harm than good.
  4. Though I have said that joining full-time coaching is not required if you have already gone through one cycle of cat classroom coaching, you should not refrain from addressing your weak areas by enrolling for online courses. Such courses will help you overcome your weaknesses and address them in the right way.
  5. Finally, you must join at least two test series . You should start with the sectional tests only after you have covered all the basics and have developed the skill to solve questions of varying difficulty. The purpose of sectional tests and mock tests is not to improve the basics but to develop the right balance between speed and accuracy.

You need to work on sundays and Saturdays to manage your time for CAT.

Its better to join a coaching center for first time because they have plenty of resources at hand and they've done this for years together.

So they can tailor the course according to your own requirements.

Start reading newspapers daily, specially the editorial columns it will help you in the long run.

If you need to get into a good Bschool the time is ripe start preparing now after you join a coaching centre.

All the best

Preparing for CAT with B.Tech requires regular work and dedication. If you can do so without coaching, then you can prepare on your own. However,Coaching would provide you a platform to gauge yourself among the other competitors. In both the cases,All India Test Series for CAT is recommended.Analyzing your tests and improving by working on your weaker section is a must for aceing CAT.Good Luck!

Dear  Mrinal

CAt is a basic aptitude exam and its preparation can be done in both ways. You can prepare on your own or choose to join a coaching institue. You can start preparing on your own and get through with the basics. You can take help from arun sharma text books or take offline coahine materials of any institue.

Also make sure you join at least one mock test series.

Hi Mrinal,

I believe it's rather too early to think about preparing for CAT. I believe one year of rigorous preparation would suffice. In my opinion, right now you should make sure that your marks for B.Tech is very good since that is very important at the time of joining a B-School. Also apart from studies take part in extra-curricular studies to an extent it doesn't hurt your academics. I would advice you to take up reading be it newspapers, fiction or nonfiction books, magazines etc. Verbal Ability constitutes one-third of your CAT score and it is easier to score marks in that section if you are an ardent reader. Try taking up logic puzzles or sudoku as a hobby as your skill in that would be useful for the Logical Reasoning section. You may start seriously preparin for CAT next year in my opinion,

All te best.

Hi Mrinal,

2020 is way far away, and preparation for such a far away target is gonna be a little bit easy. Your BTech background won't help nor will take you back. Everyone is at similar stage for CAT.

You can apply for coaching for a year, learn all basics, tips tricks and all the things related. Then preprepon your own until your exams, keep solving mock papers. I would also suggest to apply for CAT 2019 for a perfect practice scenario.

The only key is to keep practicing.

All the best

Hello Mrinal ,

It depends completely on you that you need the coaching or not . There are students who get through even without the classes. The best advise is to give as many mocks as possible .

preparation by yourself or going to coaching centre it totally depends on person to person there are people who study themselves and score good marks and there are people who go to any coaching institutes. if you don't have any issues it is better to go for coaching because from there you will get a lots of questions as well as some tricks to solve things using simple methods.
