- Revision on regular basis
- Solve at least 10 previous year’s papers
- Mock/practice test at the end
- Prepare according to the syllabus.
- Don’t ignore the maths and the aptitude portion, it’s a scoring area.
- When you finish a subject, go through its previous Year Gate questions. Solve them.
- Revise after you have completed your syllabus. More the better. Notes are helpful at this time.
- Practise till you are comfortable with all the concepts of the subject.
- Discuss a concept. It really helps your understanding.
GATE coaching is not required as long as you have right strategy and resources to prepare.
The commonly used approaches include buying/making handwritten notes, following postal study course or textbooks.
. The source of preparation will be standard textbooks. You might have already studied some of these for semester exams.
Preparation strategies without coaching:
Know the syllabus: The first step towards the preparation of any competitive exam is understanding the syllabus. Mark the chapters and relevant topics in those chapters in your books.Mark the syllabus from GATE notification.Mark the syllabus from madeeasy/ace or any other coaching institute classnotes.Include the additional topics you discover as you solve the previous year questions.
Study Material: Textbooks plus Gate and ESE objective solved papers book. Madeeasy Gate solved papers is good (only a few errors). In ESE solved objectives book numerical questions are correctly solved but dont blindly trust the answer of theory questions. The difference we see in the upsc key and the coaching institutes solutions is mainly due to theory questions. ESE objective questions are only for extra practice. Theyll help you increase speed and accuracy.
Reading the books: Once the syllabus is marked, complete a chapter. Solve the past year problems from that chapter. Highlight the important points and formulae in the book itself.
Solve previous year papers: Solve as many times as possible. Highlight the questions you couldnt solve in first attempt. Once you have completed the entire syllabus, start solving the complete GATE paper yearwise, say for past 10 year.
Revision: Revise on a daily basis. Keep 12 subjects on revision (12 hrs max per day). You can also keep 1 production or maths topic on revision list daily (2030 mins max).
Test series: Join a test series. You can start giving tests as soon as you complete a subject. Identify the weak areas and work on them. Dont be discouraged if you are not among the toppers in test series .
I hope it will help you
Good luck....
