The first step towards any preparation is to be acquainted with the syllabus, you should go through it in order to know what all to study, next comes the study materials which is very important, always keep your resources limited as this is important, some of the best books for SSC CGL or CHSL are as follows;

For General Awareness, you can read the Newspaper on a daily basis to be updated about the dynamic portion, there are magazines like Pratiyogita Darpan or various competitive exam sites which offer monthly compilations you may prefer to go through this, for static portion the best book is Lucent GK.

For Quantitative Aptitude, you can go through NCERT books in case your foundation isn't good, other good  books to add to your preparation process are M Tyra's Magical Maths, RK Agarwal's Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Exams, Objective Mathematics by Arihant Publications.

For Reasoning, you may use RK Agarwal's Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, or MK Pandey's Analytical Reasoning.

For English, the best book for Grammar is Wren and Martin, and for practice purpose you may use SP Bakshi Objective General English,Plinth to Paramount is equally  good in this regards, for this section you must focus on the editorial aspects of the newspapers.

To initiate your preparation, first of all you have to make a time-table, and accordingly assign hours to each subjects, SSC often repeats its questions so going through previous year questions is really important, over the years the competition has increased a lot in this exam, and people from diverse backgrounds now appear for the same, as exams are conducted in online mode hence you have to adapt to that, there are various competitive exam sites where mock papers for aforementioned sections are freely available, hence I would say you must practice those, it will help you know about your preparation level.
