As you are in first year of engineering, you have plenty of time to prepare, so make your first priority gaining in depth knowledge of every subject.

As you don't have to worry about time, so no need of shortcuts, you can thoroughly study standard textbooks of every subjects. Make notes in your own simple words alongside studying these books. Solve previous year problems topicwise side by side. Not only GATE problems but any previous year competetive problem you can find (ESE, ISRO etc.)

Also don't forget textbook problems. Note down good questions saparately and keep seeing them time to time.

In first year you have to make proper notes of subjects like maths electronic and electrical because they are going to help you further.

One more important thing is that second year and final year Cover most part of the gate so keep your main focus on them.
