Hello,
Samantas was the term used to denote intermediaries who had been given grants of land or to conquered feudatory rulers. The term was prominently used during Gupta period in Indian subcontinent. The literal meaning was 'neighbor'.
The samantas that gained vast power were called as mahasamantas. They gained this power by extracting high grants of lands.
Hope this helps.
