The term bench is used for the group of judges or the judiciary as a whole. To become members of the bench, either of the following has to be followed:

1. Judges are elected from the advocates by either competitive exams

2. Competent enough judges are selected as judges of high court

3. High court judges with outstanding merit are selected to be judges at the supreme court.

The advocates are known as the bar as a whole, as it stands for a body representing the advocates.
