Landfills are methods of waste disposal for solid or hazardous wastes. It was started as a method of waste disposal to ensure that the waste does not pose any treat to the environment. Usually the waste is separated from the surrounding environment by a suitable barrier (commonly soil). It also depends upon the type, quantity, characteristics of waste and the rules and regulations of that area.
