All IAS, IPS and IFS aspirants give the common UPSC test. If there clear prelims and mains, then they are called for interview. The final ranking is based on the candidate's performance in both the exam and the interview.

Now, candidates are alloted their respective roles based on their ranking.

Each of IAS, IPS and IFS posts has different cutoffs. When the merit lists are released, candidates are asked to fill a form stating their order of preferences . The cutoff marks are in descending order for IAS, IPS and IFS. The candidate must fill the choice such that their score lies in the cutoff range of the post.

Another factor that decides the allocation process is the number of vacancies in each post. If number of vacancies are less than the number of applicants for that post, then all cannot be hired. The allotment also is based on r eservation policy as made by the government.
