1)Academics- The department of Chemical Engineering in CU, houses some very renowned Professors, with experiences of at least 15–20 years in both the industry and academic lines. Almost all the Professors have completed their Masters and PhD from IIT Kharagpur.
There's also a well-equipped central library inside the campus, which would surely provide you with all the books which you'll need for your B.Tech career.
2)Placement and training opportunities- among all the engineering departments under the University of Calcutta. Some may argue that the placements are not up to the mark, for them, I must elucidate that in general, people in today’s world refer a package of >=15 LPA as “good” ; unfortunately, that’s a package which is commonly seen in the circuit branches, and not in Chemical Engineering… in this department, a package of 3.5–4.5 LPA is said to be the median package, even in IITs and NITs…. I agree that the placement stats of Chemical Engineering in our college are not as good as that in IIT Kharagpur and JU… but still, in such a state where almost no company visits the Chemical Engineering department of NIT Durgapur, and where IIEST Shipbur had to close their Chemical Engineering department because of absence in absolute placements, it’s still at a much better position.
I am posting the latest placement statistics of the chemical engineering department ,these are as per the reports of the B.Tech 2020 batch.
(i) Jacobs Worley, Polyrub Cooper Std- 4 LPA(4 placed)
(ii) Haldia Petrochemicals- 4.25 LPA(2 placed)
(iii) Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd- 4.5 LPA(1 placed)
iv) Technip FMC - 6.2 LPA(2 placed)
(v) Exide - 7 LPA(1 placed)
The students of the chemical engineering undergo their industrial training in the same organizations, and also in reputed PSU’s likewise IOCL, ONGC and GAIL.
3) Research opportunities- This is what CU is known for— its research quality. In fact, the current projects which are ongoing in the Chemical Engineering department in CU, are considered equivalent to that in IIT Kharagpur and JU. Most of the projects and research themes are SAP/DST sponsored, which itself is enough to describe the level of innovativeness present in these projects some of the projects have also been patented by the Govt. of India.
4)Preparation for various competitive exams- If you are a hardcore GATE aspirant, then the Chemical Engg. department in CU would surely be the best place for you.In this department, one of the Professors officially coaches students for the GATE examination. This year, the only person to have achieved an under 100 rank in GATE Chemical Engg. paper from Kolkata, was totally mentored by this aforementioned Professor of their college(for additional information, that person is from JU).
