how is M.Tech VLSI & Microelectronics at BITS pilani compared to other old IITs?
Dear Rahul
BITS Pilani is the top private university in India. It is very much comparable to old IITs and good NITs. However, there is no M.Tech program in BITS, it is M.E.
Secondly, for admission to M.E. Microelectronics, you must have completed your B.Tech in Electrical Engineering / ECE or allied branches.
Coming onto advantages of BITS pilani over other IITs.
1. Mode of admission:
BITS takes admission into it's M.E. course with both GATE score and BITS HD exam conducted by BITS itself, so incase your GATE didn't went well, you can still apply to BITS with BITS HD, which is conducted every year in month of April/May.
Also, BITS HD is easier then GATE, mostly conceptual.
2. Facilities :
Research facilities are excellent at BITS, it is on par with old IITs and much much better then newer IITs.
Sports facilities are also excellent, you can play and learn any sport of your choice.
3. Teaching Assistanceship:
BITS offer TA to students taking admission into M.E. program of Rs. 13,400 every month, which is slightly better then what you get in IITs after GATE 12,500.
4. Crowd:
BITS attractes the best set of minds into it's programs. There is no reservation policy, hence every candidate is of same competition level, secondly, you can find wide variety of people here, from ones who have just graduated to one with 3-4 years of industry experience. The crowd is just awesome at BITS.
5. Placements:
This point is only regarding M.E. Microelectronics branch students, Microelectronics students gets one of the best placement oppotunities, with packages comparable to Computer Science. Companies like NVIDIA, Texas Instruments, Intel, ST Micro visits campus for internship/placement, and these companies are world leader in Microelectronics. This is also same for old IITs/IISc, but there is very thin chances of same in new IITs.
You can find more details regarding that here

6. Furture Opportunities :
After your M.E. you can either settle with a job, or continue PhD at BITS or go abroad in some good universities for further studies. The BITS alumni network is very strong, so you will have a strong contact base to be with.
Disadvantages:
1. Fees:
Education in IITs/IISc is highly subsidised, you will virtually pay nothing, but M.E. from Bits will cost you anywhere 15-18 lacs. Although the facilities you will get at BITS justify the high fees, but still it will be very costly in comparison to IITs.
Hope this helps.
Could you please share the placement statistics for ME in microelectronics, embedded at BITS campuses compared to IITS. Also if it is 2.5 lakhs per semester, the total fee for MTech would be within 12 lakhs opposed to 15-18 lakh fee mentioned.pls clarify
I have done my BE in ECE. I’m currently preparing for bitshd exam. Can you give some tips to crack bitshd exam? And what’s the cutoff?
