Dear Student,

A career as a doctor is a clinical professional that involves providing services in healthcare facilities. A doctor is responsible for diagnosing, examining and identifying diseases, disorders and illnesses of patients. A doctor provides surgical, medicinal and therapeutic care to patients in hospital, healthcare and clinical lab settings.

There are numerous types of specialised doctors possessing specialisation in a certain specific organ. Apart from a general physician, aspiring candidates can also opt post graduation programme in a certain speciality to opt for specialised doctor. Some are listed below :-

  • Optometrist : An optometrist is a physician who specialises in the treatment of eyes. He or she is responsible for diagnosing eyes and detecting problems that affect its vision.
  • ENT Specialist : An ENT specialist is a physician who specialises in ear, nose, throat, sinus and neck. He or she is responsible for diagnosing, examining, identifying and treating disorders, diseases and injuries that affect the fundamental functions of life.
  • Dentist : A dentist is a healthcare professional who specialises in oral health. He or she is responsible for removing tooth decay, filling cavities, fixing fractured tooth and treating gums related problems such as gingivitis, pyorrhea and periodontal disease.
  • Cardiologist : A cardiologist is physician who specialises in cardiology. Cardiology involves study and treatment of diseases and conditions of the cardiovascular system. A cardiovascular system consists of heart and blood vessel. He or she is responsible for treating heart rhythm disorders, coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart defects, infections and other related disorders.
  • Pulmonologist :  A pulmonologist is a physician who specialises in the diagnosis and treatments of diseases, disorders and other illnesses of human respiratory system. A human respiratory system consists of lungs and other organs that provide support in breathing. He or she is responsible for treating flu and pneumonia that may have effect on your lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall.
  • Pathologist : A pathologist is a medical professional who specialises in diagnosing fluid produced by human body. He or she performs test in the laboratory.
  • Psychiatrist :  A psychiatrist is a physician who specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional, behavioural and substance use disorders.  He or she is responsible for treating mental conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and addiction.
  • Clinical Psychologist : A clinical psychologist is a medical professional who specialises in abnormal psychology. He or she applies psychological therapies and procedures to provide support to clients in recovering from various problems.
