Dear aspirant,
To become IAS officer you have to undergo UPSC Preliminary exam , UPSE Mains exam and Interview. In UPSE Preliminary Exam there are 2 papers, General Studies Paper-I & General Studies Paper-II which are object type. The preliminary exam marks are not considered for final ranking but need just for qualifying for UPSE (IAS) Mains exam.
UPSE (IAS) Mains exam there are 9 papers and it is Subjective exam. Part-A Compulsory Indian Language, Part-B English, Essay, General Studies papers I, II, III as well as IV, Optional papers I & II. So UPSE (IAS) Mains contains 2 Language Papers, 4 General Studies Papers, 1 Essay Paper and 2 Optional Papers over all 9 papers.
