As per the rules, you can give maximum of the attempts in jee mains and two in jee advanced.
Now for both the exams (jee mains and advanced) your first attempt is counted as over in your class 12th passing year.
Now if you are not satisfied with your rank then you can take your first drop. And in every year on jee mains, more than 50% students are dropper for first time and they give jee mains exam.
Now the first dropped year is your final attempt for jee advanced exam. In second drop you can not give jee advanced.
Now if the students are not satisfied with their results after dropping then many of them either go with some other colleges or again prepare for jee mains by taking a second drop.
In jee mains the second dropper students are very less because most students take admission in colleges in their first drop or some also change their career line and turn away from engineering field as they didn't get a satisfied score in jee mains in their first drop.
So basically less than 20% students who still believe in himself / herself and are optimistic to get a good rank in jee mains, give this exam for 3rd time hoping to get a good college.
So it's not a common thing or trend to give jee mains exam by again taking a second drop after your first drop.
